Public Discipleship NewsFall Retreats CompleteWith the completion of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe’s CCHD convocation day on November 3rd and the Diocese of Saginaw’s founding retreat on the weekend of November 16-18, the Public Discipleship project has completed all of its fall events. Joan Leahigh in Sante Fe and Tom Conklin in Saginaw both reported that participants were energized by the events. Still, there is no lull in Public Discipleship activity as plans for the Spring 2002 events begin with the first spring event scheduled for February 16, 2002 in Little Rock.New Info PackIn between all the retreat planning and accomplishment, the Public Discipleship team managed to create a new informational packet and mailed it to all Roundtable members. The packet is designed to give diocesan directors the information they need to inform themselves about the public discipleship project and help talk about within their diocese. Packet contents include a newly redesigned Public Discipleship brochure, a “Q & A” of the most frequently asked questions about the project, and a public discipleship prayer card. Also included is a copy of Ron Krietemeyer’s article on the importance of Public Discipleship (as appeared in the PD Bulletin earlier this year), and a “mini-book” of the year one PD group book From Faith to Action. The mini-book has a complete introduction and first session so directors can become familiar with the PD process. Plans are in process to revamp the information packet into a smaller version for diocesan directors to use directly in local outreach to parishes and other potential groups.CRS and CCHD ConnectionsSecond year public disciples have found themselves the beneficiaries of training days led by both Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). Working with the Public Discipleship project, the two organizations have modified their popular social justice trainings - Global Solidarity (CRS) and Education for Solidarity (CCHD) - to fit the context of the Public Discipleship convocation days. Pilot dioceses, Colorado Springs and New York, have participated in the CRS training and pilot dioceses, Santa Fe and Little Rock, have participated in the CCHD training. The Global Solidarity training helps the public disciples to understand issues of social justice on a global level. Using well developed presentations and interactive role-playing, the CRS training is both informative and engaging. Participants found it extremely helpful and were excited about the issues and concerns its raised. The Education for Solidarity: Catholic Social Teaching and Economic Life integrates Catholic social teaching as it relates to economic life and current economic forces at work in society. The training includes reflection processes, interactive activities, and dialogue with CCHD-funded groups. While any diocese may apply to host this training, Public Disciples have found it to be valuable in honing their skills of applying the Observe-Judge-Act methodology to modern life. ![]() ![]() ![]()
