The Roundtable Report

“New Ways of Looking at a Changed World”
to be the Theme of 2002 Symposium

Rev. J. Bryan Hehir and Dr. R.Scott Appleby to present

In light of the events of September 11th, the Roundtable Symposium Committee looked hard at what should be the main theme of the annual February Symposium. The initial proposal, before September 11th, focused on young adults and generational issues. However, after discussing the new reality facing our world the Board chose to address issues relating to Catholic Social Teaching in light of the changed world view we now face. A generational view will still be part of the discussion but the main theme will relate to how we deal with our changed world.

In the first of the two symposium plenaries, Rev. J. Bryan Hehir President of Catholic Charities USA will frame our discussion by exploring the new challenges facing the world and the church as the world shrinks and differences become unavoidable and more dangerous. After Fr. Hehir lays out the foundation for us, participants will then break up into roundtable group discussions, then come back together for a question and answer period with Fr. Hehir on what has been discussed.

During the second plenary participants will continue their discernment and discussion with Dr. R. Scott Appleby, Director of the Kroc Institute for Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Appleby will lead us in a cultural review of what the U.S. Catholic Church brings to this challenge. After a lecture by Mr. Appleby, participants will again use the roundtable group process and panel discussions to reflect over ways they can concretely respond to their constituencies.
