At last we have a practical catechesis helping us all down the road from vengeance (‘an eye for an eye’) to compassion (‘Father, forgive them…’) While it is a great thing that Pope John Paul II and the U.S. Catholic Bishops have declared clear opposition to the death penalty, statements of leaders alone are not enough to change hearts. We have needed a practical guide like this for a long time.
